Sydney Thunder secured their first win of the Big Bash League season after defeating Brisbane Heat, with Shadab Khan playing a decisive role with the ball in Canberra.
Chasing a target of 194, Brisbane Heat were unable to repeat their record-breaking chase of 258 from earlier in the week. Shadab Khan shut down any hope, taking 4 for 24 from four overs at Manuka Oval.
Matt Renshaw, who scored a century in his previous match, once again led the scoring for Brisbane Heat, making 43 runs off 28 balls. The left-hander struck four boundaries and one six during his innings but was later dismissed by Shadab.
Heat began their chase positively, with Colin Munro and Jack Wildermuth adding 37 runs in 4.4 overs. However, Shadab Khan halted their progress by dismissing both batters in the same over.
Munro was caught after scoring 18, while Wildermuth struggled to find momentum and was dismissed for 15. Heat were reduced to 38 for 2 after five overs.
Renshaw then rebuilt the innings alongside Hugh Weibgen. The pair added 70 runs from 47 balls, taking Heat past the 100-run mark and keeping the chase alive against Sydney Thunder.
Shadab Khan once again proved decisive, dismissing Renshaw to provide Thunder with a crucial breakthrough. Shortly after, Weibgen was bowled by Daniel Sams for 30.
Following these wickets, Heat slipped from 108 for 3 to 115 for 4 in 14.3 overs, losing momentum in the chase.
This victory was important for Sydney Thunder after consecutive defeats. Both teams now have one win and two losses in this edition of the Big Bash League.
