Apple TV locks in PLATONIC season three after critical acclaim

Apple TV has locked in a third season of its comedy Platonic, extending the story of Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as their chaotic midlife friendship continues to resonate with audiences around the world.

The streamer confirmed the renewal after season two landed a 100% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the pair’s chemistry, calling them “the perfect match” with “sensational physical comedy” and “wildly funny banter.”

Co-created by Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, the comedy has frequently been described by reviewers as “one of television’s best half-hour comedies.”

In a joint statement, the co-creators said:

“We couldn’t be more excited to get back into the world of ‘Platonic’ with our amazing partners, Rose and Seth and Sony and Apple”

Apple’s head of programming Matt Cherniss also praised the series, saying:

“‘Platonic’ is proof there is no duo better at making us belly laugh at mid life crises than Seth and Rose.”

“Nick and Francesca accomplished the rare feat of taking the show to the next level in season two, and, along with our partners at Sony, we can’t wait to see what they cook up for season three.”

The series follows a pair of former best friends, played by Rogen and Byrne, who reconnect in midlife, only to find their revived friendship beginning to derail the rest of their lives in increasingly comedic ways.

Season two continues their misadventures as they navigate new pressures involving work, weddings and relationship turmoil, all while attempting — and often failing — to steady each other through the chaos.

Alongside Luke Macfarlane and Carla Gallo, the second season introduces guest appearances from Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett and Milo Manheim. The show is produced by Sony Pictures Television, with executive producers Byrne, Stoller, Delbanco, Conor Welch, Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver for Point Grey Pictures.

The renewal comes as Rogen continues to garner attention for Apple’s acclaimed comedy The Studio, which recently scored 23 Emmy Award nominations, while Byrne remains a key presence on the platform through her role in the dark comedy Physical.
