Varun Dhawan looked back at his early days with Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra during the latest episode of Koffee With Karan 9. The actor revealed that Alia had spoken about wanting to have children when they were filming their debut film, Student of the Year. He also praised Ranbir Kapoor for his approach to fatherhood, calling him an amazing father to his and Alia’s daughter, Raha.

During the conversation, host Karan Johar pointed out that all three actors from Student of the Year are now parents to daughters. Varun and his wife Natasha Dalal have a daughter, Lara, while Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani are parents to a daughter named Saraya. Alia and Ranbir, meanwhile, welcomed Raha in November 2022.

Reacting to Karan’s observation, Varun said, “I always knew Alia would be the first to have a child. Since we did Student of the Year, she had always mentioned that she would love to have a child. I found it bizarre because she was a kid.”
Janhvi Kapoor then pointed out that Alia was just 19 at the time. Varun added that she would often talk about children and her wish to become a mother. He also admitted that he had not expected Sidharth to be the last among them to have a child, as he thought the order would be Alia, Sidharth and then himself.

Karan also asked Varun whether any awkwardness from the past resurfaced when he met Alia and Sidharth, given their history of working together and the time that had passed since their debut.
Varun said he and Sidharth get along well whenever they meet. He added that his interactions with Alia and Ranbir are also warm, with plenty of conversation. Speaking about Ranbir’s relationship with Raha, Varun praised the actor’s parenting. “When I see Ranbir as a parent, he’s amazing. He’s so good as a father,” he said, adding that it made him feel “really ashamed”.

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor married in April 2022 and welcomed their daughter, Raha, on November 6 that year. The couple have occasionally shared glimpses of their life as parents, while generally keeping their daughter’s life away from the spotlight.
Varun and Natasha Dalal, who married in 2021, welcomed their daughter Lara on June 3, 2024. Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani also became parents to a daughter, Saraya, in 2025.
