Score: 26-19 Patriots
The Patriots held off the Jets in the second half of Sunday’s Week 6 showdown to secure their third straight win and improve to 4-2 this season.
After the Jets struck first with a field goal, the Patriots responded with a 42-yard bomb from Drake Maye to Romeo Doubs for the go-ahead touchdown. Unfortunately for New England, Doubs left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return.
The Pats added a 32-yard field goal and Maye’s second TD pass — a nine-yarder to DeMario Douglas — to extend their lead to 17-3 at the half.
It was a shaky start to the second half for New England. Jets QB Geno Smith cut the deficit back to seven with a 48-yard TD pass to Omar Cooper. About six minutes later, the Jets trimmed it to four with a field goal.
Maye and the Patriots bounced back with a seven-yard TD pass to Hunter Henry, though kicker Andy Borregales missed the extra point. After the Jets cut it back to seven with a field goal, New England killed clock with help from backup running back Corey Kiner (11 carries, 57 yards) and converted a field goal of its own with 1:12 left to make it a 10-point game. New York was only able to muster another field goal, resulting in a 26-19 Pats victory.
Maye finished 18-for-32 with 235 yards, three TDs, and no turnovers. Smith was 20-for-30 with one TD and one interception.
While the Patriots are undoubtedly happy to escape with a win, it wasn’t all good news for Mike Vrabel’s group. They lost a handful of players to injury in addition to Doubs. Edge rusher Dre’Mont Jones and offensive linemen Alijah Vera-Tucker, Morgan Moses, and Ben Brown also left the game.
The Pats will hope to have them back healthy when they visit the Chicago Bears for Thursday Night Football.
