Boston Celtics
Devin Carter played in just one preseason game, but Boston liked what it saw.
He only appeared in one of four preseason games for the Boston Celtics, but the organization is reportedly keeping Devin Carter.
Carter, a 24-year-old point guard, agreed to a two-way contract with the Celtics, his hometown team, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.
The Providence College product stood out in his lone preseason game on Oct. 8 against the Cleveland Cavaliers when he recorded 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 25 minutes of action. He went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and notched one 3-pointer, but he did commit five turnovers. An illness kept him out of the final three preseason contests.
It was a brief showing, but Boston clearly likes what Carter displayed. The two-way contract will allow Carter to split time between the NBA squad and the organization’s G League team, the Maine Celtics.
He can be active for up to 50 regular season games, but would only be eligible to play in the postseason if Boston converts his contract to a standard deal beforehand.
Carter would join Dillon Mitchell and Amari Williams as the Celtics’ three two-way players for the 2026-27 season. He’ll give a veteran-heavy backcourt that features players like Derrick White and Mike Conley a surge of youth.
The Celtics originally picked Carter up on an Exhibit 10 contract last month, which is a one-year, non-guaranteed training camp deal. The Atlanta Hawks had traded for him in June, but ultimately waived him prior to Boston snagging him.
Carter, the No. 13 overall pick by the Sacramento Kings in 2024, didn’t live up to the hype out west following a rookie year shoulder injury. He averaged 6.4 points per game, shot 40.1 percent from the field, and hit 27.4 percent from three in his first two seasons (74 games).
However, Carter’s defensive prowess stands out. He averaged 2.7 rebounds per game and 0.7 steals per game between 2024-26. He brings the energy and toughness the Celtics thrive on defensively and love from their guards, as he showed in the preseason.
Carter’s time with the Providence College Friars (2022-24) isn’t his only tie to the region. The Miami, Florida, native graduated from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, in 2021.
His contributions to this era of basketball in Boston remain to be seen, but he’ll have the opportunity to prove himself ahead of the playoffs.
