The Logies might not have listened to TV Blackbox, but the ARIAs apparently got the memo — confirming Melanie Bracewell and Tim McDonald as hosts of the 40th Annual ARIA Awards this November.
Back in May, this author argued the hosts of Network 10’s The Cheap Seats were ready to take over Australian television’s biggest awards night.
Our case was simple: after Sam Pang helped make the Logies feel sharp, current and unpredictable again, Bracewell and McDonald had the chemistry, comic timing and live television experience to carry that momentum forward.

The Logies sadly went elsewhere.
The ARIAs have now swooped in.
The Australian Recording Industry Association confirmed on Tuesday that the pair will host the 40th Annual ARIA Awards in partnership with Spotify at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on Wednesday, 18 November.
And while we are not suggesting ARIA executives spent the winter carefully studying TV Blackbox editorials — we are also not ruling it out.
The appointment gives Bracewell and McDonald another major platform after six seasons of The Cheap Seats, where their fast-moving chemistry and ability to find humour in live television chaos has become the show’s defining strength.
The program won the 2023 Logie Award for Most Outstanding Entertainment Program, passed 100 episodes in 2024 and returned for its sixth season in 2026.

Now they will be trading television clips for Australian music’s biggest night.
Bracewell marked the announcement in typically understated fashion.
“Thrilled to host the ARIAs with my friend and colleague Tim McDonald.
Hoping they didn’t book us for experience.
The last awards ceremony I hosted was a raffle for a meat tray.”
McDonald was equally enthusiastic.
“Australian music is the best in the world, so we are so excited and honoured to be hosting!
I can’t wait to celebrate this music milestone – 40 years of the ARIA Awards, and 24 years since I failed the recorder in grade three.”
It is exactly the sort of self-deprecating style that made the pair such an obvious fit for a major awards ceremony in the first place.
Their strength has never just been delivering scripted jokes. It is their ability to react, improvise and make awkward live moments part of the entertainment.
That was the point of our argument about the Logies.
The ceremony needed hosts who understood television, internet culture and the value of moments that travel beyond the broadcast itself.

Apparently Australian music agreed.
Joining them throughout the show will be Latifa Tee, while the ARIA Red Carpet will be hosted by Angela Bishop, Georgie Tunny and Latifa Tee.
Music journalist and The Pop Pod host Sam Murphy will also return to take over ARIA’s social channels during the event.
For ARIA, the appointment delivers two proven television performers with established chemistry and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.
For TV Blackbox, it is difficult not to feel at least slightly vindicated.
The Logies might not have taken our advice.
But their loss has become the ARIAs’ gain.
The 40th Annual ARIA Awards in partnership with Spotify, hosted by Melanie Bracewell and Tim McDonald, streams live on Paramount+ from 5.00pm AEDT and airs on 10 following Big Brother on Wednesday, 18 November.
