After a back-and-forth affair, a 56-yard field goal from kicker Andre Szmyt gave the Cleveland Browns the win.
Well, who had this on their bingo board? The Cleveland Browns are defying all expectations right now to start the year. After a rough start to the season, Cleveland now finds itself on top of the AFC North after besting the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-24. After a back-and-forth affair, a 56-yard field goal from kicker Andre Szmyt gave the Browns the win.
The Browns held a comfortable lead for most of the game, keeping the Steelers at arm’s length after getting a one-touchdown lead. However, Pittsburgh finally broke through late in the game with a touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers and a successful quarterback sneak during the two-point try, tying up the game with one minute and thirty seconds left. It was up to Deshaun Watson and co. to try and eke out a win.
Somehow, they did. In that time, the Browns were able to drive down the field and get set up in field goal range. However, Cleveland only got to just past midfield before being stopped on a third-and-eight attempt. That forced Cleveland to try their hand at a 56-yard field goal, one yard longer than Szmyt’s longest field goal in his NFL career.
Thankfully for the Browns, Szmyt nailed the 56-yarder with relative ease, giving the team a lead with just ten seconds left. Cleveland picked off Rodgers’ Hail Mary attempt on the next play, giving the team a win.
With that win, the Browns are now 3-1 and sit on top of the AFC North for now. The Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals are yet to play their games, so it remains to be seen if Cleveland will remain the sole team on top. Regardless, the fact that they’re in this position this season is impressive in it’s own right.
