Stray, Feral or Free-Ranging? Understanding India’s Dogs and Their Impact on Wildlife

Stray. Street dog. Free-ranging. Feral.

A dog sleeping outside a tea stall may be called a stray. A pack seen near a forest may be described as feral. A village dog that spends the day wandering through fields may simply be called a “local dog”.

But ecologically, these are not necessarily the same animals.

The distinction matters in a country where domestic dogs live alongside some of the world’s most threatened wild carnivores.

In India, dogs are not confined to homes and cities. They live around farms, villages, garbage dumps, grazing lands and forest fringes, including landscapes adjoining protected areas.

Some have owners. Some depend on communities for food. Some have no direct human care. A smaller proportion may live almost entirely independently of people.

Collectively, these dogs can be described as free-ranging dogs.

But that does not necessarily mean they are feral.

So, what exactly is a ‘free-ranging dog’?

A free-ranging dog is essentially a domestic dog that is allowed to move around without being confined.

It could be an owned village dog that sleeps at home but spends the day roaming through fields. It could be an unowned street dog that survives by scavenging. It could also be a truly feral dog that lives independently of people.

A 2026 study by researchers from the Wildlife Institute of India, published in Ethnobiology Letters, looked at dogs and their owners in five villages inside the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve landscape. Seventy percent of respondents kept dogs, and most of these dogs were free-ranging and fed leftover human food.

These dogs, therefore, were not necessarily feral. Many were connected to households, but were also free to move through a landscape shared with wildlife.

Another 2026 study from Mudumalai, published in Movement Ecology, tracked owned free-ranging dogs using GPS collars. The researchers found that these dogs moved through a human-wildlife landscape, with settlements and human presence influencing their movements.

A dog can have a home and still be free-ranging.

Then what is a stray dog?

“Stray” is generally used for a dog that is lost, abandoned or living without a consistent owner.

But even this category is not always straightforward.

Many street dogs in India are born and raised around human settlements. They may never have had an owner, yet survive on human food waste, leftovers or food provided by people.

So, “stray” tells us something about a dog’s relationship with ownership. It does not necessarily tell us how dependent the animal is on humans.

And what makes a dog feral?

This is where the term becomes more specific.

A feral dog is generally understood to be one that lives independently of humans, obtaining its food and shelter without regular human support.

It may avoid people, hunt or scavenge independently, and form groups.

But a dog does not become feral simply because it lives outside a house.

A free-ranging village dog can enter a forest. A pet can chase wildlife. An unowned street dog can form a pack.

The dog’s behaviour, dependence on people and access to wildlife habitat can all matter when understanding its impact.

What about the dogs we see in Indian villages?

A large proportion of India’s free-ranging dogs belong to the population commonly referred to as the Indian native dog, Indian pariah dog or desi dog.

The 2026 Mudumalai study notes that India’s free-ranging dog population primarily consists of these native Indian dogs, also commonly called pariah or desi dogs.

They are not a single “breed” in the way a Labrador or German Shepherd is understood as a recognised breed. Rather, they are a long-established population of dogs adapted to India’s human-dominated landscapes.

Other dogs found in rural areas can include owned mixed-breed dogs, livestock-guarding dogs and recognised Indian breeds such as the Mudhol Hound, Rajapalayam, Chippiparai and Kanni.

But the presence of an Indian breed or local dog near a forest does not automatically make it feral.

So, when does a dog become a wildlife problem?

The answer is: when its movement and behaviour bring it into conflict with wild species.

A 2023 review of free-ranging dogs and biodiversity in India reported that at least 80 native species, including 31 threatened species, are harmed by free-ranging dogs through mechanisms such as harassment, nest predation, predation, competition and hybridisation.

The issue is particularly relevant around India’s wild canids.

Wolves, jackals, foxes and other carnivores increasingly share landscapes with humans — and, consequently, with our dogs.

A study from the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve in central India examined the spatial overlap between free-ranging dogs and wild carnivores including the Indian wolf, golden jackal, Indian fox and striped hyena. The researchers found significant overlap in some areas and highlighted potential risks involving competition, predation and disease.

Another study examined free-ranging dogs and Indian foxes around the Great Indian Bustard Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra. It found exposure to canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus and canine adenovirus in both populations.

Among the sampled dogs, 93% had been exposed to one or more of the three pathogens. Among the foxes, the figure was 87%.

In Ladakh’s Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, researchers studied free-ranging dogs between 2015 and 2017 and found that wild species formed part of the dogs’ diet.

Scat analysis showed that wild species accounted for 13.06% of the recorded diet, including birds, lagomorphs, rodents and Tibetan wild ass. Dog densities were also highest around human settlements.

Then there was Bahraich

Few recent Indian examples show the importance of identifying animals correctly as starkly as the 2024 wolf attacks in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh.

During the months of attacks, the region was gripped by fear of wolves. The Forest Department launched Operation Bhediya after a series of attacks in which at least 10 people were killed and dozens injured.

But not every reported attack was ultimately established as a wolf attack.

In one incident in Yadavpur village, a man and his grandson were attacked by an animal that villagers believed was a wolf. The animal was killed. According to a senior forest official quoted by ThePrint, examination established that it was a feral dog, not a wolf.

There were also instances in which jackals were mistaken for wolves and killed amid the panic.

Yet ecologically, these are completely different animals.

In a crisis, local descriptions can become less precise. But that distinction matters.

Wolves are already under pressure in India. Veteran wildlife scientist YV Jhala has previously highlighted how rare wolf attacks on humans are and warned against attributing attacks without adequate evidence. In August 2024, he argued that DNA evidence from kill sites would be needed to establish the identity of the animal responsible for the Bahraich attacks with certainty.

So, should every dog near a forest be removed?

The answer is not to treat every free-ranging dog as a threat, or every dog-wildlife interaction as evidence that dogs must be eliminated.

The focus instead has to be on responsible management.

This can include responsible pet ownership, preventing owned dogs from roaming into wildlife habitats, sterilisation and vaccination where appropriate, better management of garbage and food waste, preventing deliberate feeding of large dog populations near protected areas, and monitoring dog movements in sensitive wildlife landscapes.

Ultimately, it comes down to understanding the animal in front of us:

Where does this dog live? Who feeds it? How far does it roam? And does it regularly enter wildlife habitat?

Those questions can tell us far more than simply calling it a “stray” or “feral” dog.
