Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla celebrated its 40th anniversary in its new flagship store christened Mubarak Baug—the newly-restored Framjee Cawasji Institute building in an iconic South Mumbai neighbourhood. Founder and chairperson of the Reliance Foundation Nita Ambani was in attendance in a maroon, pure chiffon sari by the designer duo and a matching full-sleeve blouse.

The sari’s most distinctive detail was its velvet border, set with laser-cut geometric motifs, while the rest of the sari was simple and elegant. The full-sleeve blouse followed the same design language featuring Art Deco-inspired trellis patterns across the bodice and sleeves—a possible ode to Mumbai’s iconic architecture history..

Ambani turned to her personal jewellery collection for accessorising this look, choosing a red corded necklace with a tear drop-shaped diamond and dangler earrings featuring a trail of white and yellow diamonds. On her hands, she wore a diamond cocktail ring to complement her sari.

Her longtime makeup artist and collaborator Mickey Contractor kept her beauty look minimal, limited to kohl-lined eyes, pink shimmery eyeshadow and a small red bindi. Hair stylist Amit Thakur styled her hair in voluminous waves, swept over one shoulder.

Ambani’s affinity for saris is particularly evident in her collection of saris from Swadesh, designed in collaboration with Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. For Anant Ambani’s engagement ceremony, she wore one such beige sari with a deep orange border, draped in Gujarati seedha-pallu style. Her wardrobe also includes an off-white georgette sari detailed with sequins, crystals and resham embroidery from AJSK’s Burano collection that made an appearance at a family wedding. Her rose-pink sari featuring hand-embroidered lace, sequins and pearls that she wore to the United in Triumph celebration at her residence Antilia in Mumbai has a fan following of its own.

From the Vogue desk:

“Swap the pendant-style necklace completely with an antique-gold choker, and limit jewellery to a statement cocktail ring. Style hair into a centre-parted bun, finished with a cluster of deep red roses tucked tightly at the back, almost like an extension of the sari. Push the beauty further with smudged kohl, brushed-up brows and a deep oxblood lip,” says Manglien Gangte, Vogue India fashion associate.
