A routine voter verification exercise turned into an emotional family reunion in Haryana’s Jind district when two brothers, separated for nearly 35 years, came face to face at a government school.
The reunion took place during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) verification process at the Government Senior Secondary School in Haryana. The two brothers embraced and wept after meeting each other following decades of separation.
SIR VERIFICATION LEADS TO UNEXPECTED REUNION
According to details, Sita Ram had reached the school to collect his School Leaving Certificate. During the interaction, Booth Level Officer (BLO) Krishan Kumar asked him for details about his village, father and brother.
Sita Ram mentioned his brother’s name as Balbir. The BLO then contacted Balbir over the phone as part of the verification process.
When Balbir heard Sita Ram’s name, he immediately recognised him.
“Yes, he is indeed my brother. I have been searching for him for the past 35 years,” Balbir said over the phone, according to the account shared by the BLO.
Balbir then rushed to the school to meet his brother.
When the two finally saw each other, they embraced and broke down in tears. The emotional reunion left people present at the school visibly moved as the brothers met after more than three decades.
FAMILY HAD PRESUMED SITA RAM DEAD
BLO Krishan Kumar said the family had been searching for Sita Ram for years and had eventually presumed that he was dead.
He said the identity verification took an unexpected turn when Sita Ram provided the name of his brother, Balbir.
“Their family members stated that their brother had been missing for 35 years and they had presumed him dead. They asked if he was physically challenged in his legs, and I confirmed that he was,” Krishan Kumar said.
According to the BLO, Balbir, Sita Ram’s younger brother, immediately came to the school after being informed. The two brothers then embraced, with Balbir weeping bitterly during the reunion.
SITA RAM HAD BEEN LIVING IN PUNJAB
Sita Ram had been living in Punjab, where he worked in a government job. Before that, he had worked as a peon at a private school.
He returned after 35 years to collect his School Leaving Certificate from the government school in Manoharpur. The information shared during the verification process ultimately led to contact with his family and his reunion with Balbir. Sita Ram is the fifth among six brothers.
OFFICIAL CALLS IT A MEMORABLE MOMENT
Another official Ramesh Kumar, who was present at the school, described the reunion as a memorable experience.
He said the incident went beyond an administrative verification exercise and became a means of reconnecting family members who had been separated for decades.
The incident also highlighted how a routine verification process, coupled with the alertness of a BLO, unexpectedly brought two brothers together after 35 years.
What began as Sita Ram’s visit to collect an old school certificate ended with an emotional reunion that brought a decades-old family separation to an end.
