Final: Red Sox 1, Yankees 16

The Boston Red Sox lose the season series to the New York Yankees 16-1.

New York exploded for five runs in the fifth inning after a controversial call on a missed catch by Ceddanne Rafaela. After a leadoff single, Rafaela made a diving play on a hit by Jazz Chisholm Jr., but first base umpire Edwin Moscoso determined there wasn’t clear evidence that Rafaela complete the catch. Ranger Suarez went on to allow five earned runs, including a three-run home run to Heliot Ramos.

Boston failed to score a run until the eighth inning. Nick Sogard recorded an RBI base hit against Yankees starter Will Warren, which ended his day on the mound after seven scoreless innings. Warren struck out seven batters and limited the Red Sox to just six hits during his start.

From there, the Yankees turned the game into a laugher. Jovani Moran allowed five earned runs through 1.1 innings, and the Red Sox were forced to use Andruw Monasterio as a positional pitcher. Monasterio also allowed five earned runs during his rough stint on the mound. The Yankees tallied four home runs during the eighth inning which exploded their run total to 16.

Trevor Story and Roman Anthony returned to Boston’s lineup today, and they were the most impactful bats for the Red Sox. Story and Anthony both recorded a single and double in their first games since May.

The Red Sox will travel back home to play the Seattle Mariners in a three game series with Payton Tolle starting game one. Tomorrow’s first pitch will be at 6:45 p.m.
