Todd Monken not ready to make QB call after Dillon Gabriel splash

Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken will have a crucial decision to make about their quarterback situation.

The Cleveland Browns did not go winless in the preseason after Dillon Gabriel led the squad to a blowout victory over the New England Patriots, 37-13, at Huntington Bank Field on Thursday.

Gabriel put on a masterclass, throwing 12-of-15 for 186 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He is presumed to be the third-string quarterback behind Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, but he might have accorded himself another look from coach Todd Monken after he dismantled the Patriots.

He is expected to make the 53-man roster, but the veteran signal-caller cannot be too complacent, especially after Monken’s response when asked about their quarterback room, as reported by The Athletic’s Zac Jackson.

“Monken said he’s not getting into anything regarding how many QBs the Browns will keep on the 53. Said he and Andrew Berry still have to discuss that,” said Jackson X.

Taylen Green is also in the lineup. He went 5-of-7 for 27 yards against the Patriots. He also had eight carries for 66 yards. He was drafted by Cleveland in the sixth round in April.

Gabriel, who was picked by the Browns in the third round in 2025, had his moments in his rookie year. In 10 games, including six starts, he threw for 937 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions.

He has remained even-keeled amid the quarterback situation in Cleveland, stressing that he is not sweating the things he cannot control.

“I don’t take things personally. It’s a business. I’m focused on what I need to do to get better, and that’s all I’m focused on. I’m present with that,” said Gabriel.

The Browns will battle the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1.
