The best homes reveal their owners slowly. Whether it’s a stack of books, accumulated one-by-one, beside the bed. The bowl by the door that somehow collects everything from car keys to hair ties. A shelf carrying objects gathered across years and cities. The chair everyone gravitates towards. Our interiors become autobiographical almost by accident, by the rituals we repeat inside them – and less by grand decorating decisions we might have had upon moving in.
Furniture provides the framework for all of it. And for Australian furniture and homewares brand RJ Living, designing that framework begins with longevity. Since 2012, the family-run business has built its collections around craftsmanship, material integrity and a belief that a piece should feel relevant years after it first enters a room.
Its expanded Bound collection explores this idea through one of the home’s most enduring materials: timber. Designed by RJ Living’s in-house team in Melbourne, Bound now extends across Oak and Deep Oak finishes, with the latter tapping into a growing appetite for warmer, richer woods. The collection’s clean silhouettes give the material space to take centre stage, bringing depth and warmth into the rooms where our days begin and end.
The Bound Bed Base anchors the bedroom, accompanied by the Bound Bedside Table, now available in an additional size. The Bound Six-Drawer Chest expands the collection further, while the Breeze Shelving Unit carries the Deep Oak finish into living spaces. There is an appealing practicality to each piece. Bedside tables become home to half-read novels and morning coffee. Drawers hold the pieces we reach for without thinking. Shelves gradually fill with photographs, ceramics, records and evidence of wherever we have been lately. Over time, furniture becomes inseparable from the life arranged around it.
That sense of evolution also informs the newly launched RJ Living Members program. Complimentary to join, membership offers early access to collection launches, member-only offers, styling consultations and ongoing design inspiration. It acknowledges a reality familiar to anyone who has ever made a home their own: rooms tend to develop over years rather than arrive fully formed.
The brand itself has followed a similarly considered trajectory. Today, with showrooms across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, alongside a growing trade program for designers, architects and builders, its expanding in-house product and design team carries the same approach from first sketch through to finished piece. Perhaps that is a more useful way to think about decorating: forget the pressure to finish a room and simply give it time to collect things, change shape and reflect the person living there.
