Robert Griffin III says that the Browns ownership went over head coach Todd Monken’s head to start Deshaun Watson.
The Cleveland Browns recently caused a stir when they named Deshaun Watson their starting quarterback over Shedeur Sanders for the new season. The move was interpreted by many as having been made by head coach Todd Monken, although some have speculated that the decision could have come from higher up in the organization.
Recently, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III weighed in on the discourse with a hot take and some apparent investigative journalism.
“Sources tell me Deshaun Watson WAS NOT Todd Monken’s choice as the starter and many in the building thought Shedeur Sanders was the right move for the team on and off the field after Watson attacked the fans. Browns want Deshaun to play for his pay. The fans deserve better,” wrote Griffin III on X, formerly Twitter.
It’s unclear what sources Griffin III has or whether or not they are legitimate, but RG3 is not the first person to speculate that the Browns’ ownership could have forced Monken’s decision due to the large amount of money the team has tied to Watson.
Of course, had Sanders played better during his starts last season and throughout training camp and this year’s preseason, that stance might have been met with considerably more resistance. It’s also not out of the question that Sanders could still get a chance to start again at some point this year if Watson looks like he did the first time he suited up in a Browns uniform.
Still, for the time being, fans are understandably frustrated with the team not going with the younger, and seemingly more promising, option of the two.
The Browns will kick off their regular season on September 13 vs the Jacksonville Jaguars.
