Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken set the record straight about something he said LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin made amid the Dae’Quan Wright situation. Monken previously said Kiffin “reached out” and that he didn’t respond to the call.
On Tuesday, Monken cleared the air, saying that Kiffin didn’t actually call him.
“First off, I should not … one of our staff had said, that’s why I said ‘us’ and not ‘me’ … one of our staff had said they had gotten a text,” Monken said (h/t Mark Heim of AL.com). “I should’ve followed through with it. Maybe they meant someone from (LSU’s) staff. That’s on me. Should not throw someone’s name on there without following through on it.
“I was just making light of it. I was really not trying to make a big thing of it. I was just like, ‘man, what this world has come to.’ It was almost silliness and goofiness. It’s really not a big deal other than I probably shouldn’t have (said that) without following through.”
In any case, the Wright situation is a much bigger and more intriguing subject than Monken’s clarificatory statement on a supposed call he got from Kiffin.4
Wright is among the players given a temporary restraining order by a Louisiana court that paved the way for them to hit the transfer portal. Even though he could play in the NFL and was on the Browns’ roster for a preseason game, Wright has a chance to see action for a college football team in 2026.
That team is expected to be LSU, with Wright clearing waivers on Tuesday.
