One former Ole Miss player might be joining his old coach, Lane Kiffin, at LSU, after being cut by the Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns recently waived rookie tight end Dae’Quan Wright. Wright went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft after playing two seasons for Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss. Now, Wright is looking to return to college and join Kiffin at LSU.
It is a messy situation in which a player who was just on the roster for an NFL Team could be heading back to play at the college ranks. It is also one that has opened a lot of questions, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
“I’m speechless at the news that TE Dae’Quan Wright will be waived by the Browns and join LSU and play for Lane Kiffin if he clears waivers,” Breer wrote. “Could this mean that next week at this time, at the cutdown, players are mulling whether to join practice squads in Jacksonville or New Orleans … or the Indiana Hoosiers? It looks like it.”
Wright was part of the class of 2022, along with players such as Drew Allar and Cade Klubnik. Could they also go back to college and play again? Breer puts the blame for all of this on one person, former President of the NCAA Mark Emmert.
“And that’s only indicative of how willing the powers that be at the college level have been to let this happen. The primary culprit, as I see it, is retired NCAA president Mark Emmert. I’d say for a good quarter-century (if not more) before it happened, we all knew that eventually the jig was going to be up for the big-time schools and players were going to get paid. The NCAA, in turn, had all that time to prepare for the inevitable and get a deal done with the players,” Breer added.
“Instead, under Emmert’s direction, they simply let the old crooked system run its course until July 2021, when the courts told the schools it couldn’t be done that way anymore. Emmert announced he was stepping down in April 2022, running from the problem he was complicit in creating, allowing for others to clean the mess his negligence created.”
This could end up being a massive problem and very quickly. Sixteen FBS programs open their season on August 29. NFL cut day is on August 30. Then, the other 132 FBS teams open their season the next weekend. Unless a final decision on eligibility comes soon, the floodgates could open.
