TMC Moves Supreme Court Against Rebel MPs, Seeks Action On Speaker Delay Over Disqualification Plea – India Today

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has approached the Supreme Court against 20 rebel Members of Parliament who left the party to merge with the NCPI while retaining their parliamentary seats. A Chief Justice of India-led bench agreed to hear the petition filed through TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The plea challenges the delay by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in deciding on the disqualification petitions. The TMC argues that such delays impact parliamentary democracy and alter house numbers against the elected party mandate. Legal correspondent Anisha Mathur highlighted that the hearing will consider whether the court can lay down a timeline for the Speaker’s decision, drawing parallels to similar arguments raised in the Maharashtra Shiv Sena disqualification matter.
