The Browns rookie head coach has a plan in place for how he wants his group to handle the Bills’ joint practice.
Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken continues to dance around starting quarterback questions. Instead he focused heavily on the Buffalo Bills, due to their upcoming joint practices in NFL Training Camp.
Monken’s team will face the Bills before facing each other on Saturday in NFL Preseason action. The rookie head coach detailed the plan in place for both sides while addressing reporters Monday.
“The plan is that we’ll play our ones a significant amount against each other on Thursday in a controlled environment,” Monken said. “Not that the other guys aren’t going to get reps, but in a controlled environment and see where we’re at.”
So this points to his projected starters playing on Thursday in this practice instead of suiting up on Saturday. Yet once again many who attend the session will wonder who gets starting reps behind center between DeShaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders.
The former delivered a strong outing in limited action during the 34-10 loss to the Chicago Bears Saturday. Watson, now age 30, went 11-of-15 passing for 126 yards and took one sack. But he looked like the efficient version of himself during his early Houston Texans run.
Sanders ended up throwing the ball 11 times, completing six throws in the process. Yet he settled for 79 yards and got picked off once. That performance now points to Watson gaining the arrow up on the ongoing quarterback race between both.
Meanwhile, Dillon Gabriel also lined up behind center but didn’t fare much better: Going 5-of-8 for just 23 yards and taking two sacks. Plus endured one interception.
