Popping on the television and tuning in to your favourite guilty pleasure show, you might find yourself gravitating towards a specific character. You’re thinking, ‘God, I relate to them so much,’ perhaps even going so far as to call them your spirit animal.
Well, we’ve taken the discussion to the stars and decided that every zodiac sign has a young adult character alter ego. Thanks to a multitude of platforms, over the years our eyes have been truly blessed with some of the best YA shows. We’ve had The O.C. and Teen Wolf, right through to more recent titles like Off Campus and Sterling Point. They capture that precious essence of being a young adult on the precipice of firsts: high-stakes emotions, infinite possibilities and, for those of us watching, a healthy dose of nostalgia.
So, the RUSSH editors have congregated and consulted with the stars to determine which YA character is your zodiac sign’s alter ego.
Aries: Ramona, Sterling Point
We’re only just getting acquainted with Ramona from Sterling Point, but it is hard to deny her ‘act now, deal with consequences later’ energy. That is Aries to a tee. Instinctive, headstrong, Aries is ruled by Mars, so it is no surprise there’s an appetite for confrontation, desire and pursuit.
Taurus: Summer Roberts, The O.C.
Dare we say the ultimate Taurus? Summer shares a true Taurus’ appreciation for beautiful things, while also having strong opinions and zero interest for being rushed. This zodiac sign is ruled by Venus, which explains their love of fashion, beauty, pleasure and comfort. But don’t be fooled, under all of that is one extremely loyal friend – another trait Summer exemplifies. She can seem superficial until you realise how deeply attached she is to the people she loves. She’s stubborn but dependable, and knows exactly what she likes. And once a Taurus has decided Seth Cohen is their person? Good luck changing their mind.
Gemini: Lydia Martin, Teen Wolf
Our favourite Witch, Lydia embodies the Gemini contradiction beautifully. She’s the smartest person in the room while also allowing everyone to think she’s something else entirely. Gemini’s are cerebral, curious and socially dexterous. They understand how to switch between different worlds. Lydia can be the popular girl, academic genius, supernatural investigator, Banshee and emotional centre without any of those identities cancelling another out.
Cancer: Seth Cohen, The O.C.
Underneath approximately 700 layers of sarcasm, Seth is extremely sentimental. Very Cancer. He romanticises people, places, memories and relationships, retreats into his own little world when reality becomes uncomfortable and gets deeply attached to the people he considers home. Even his obsessions with comic books, Chrismukkah, and Summer are all emotional security blankets.
Leos need an audience, and Ilya knows exactly when everyone is looking at him (but let’s be real, everyones always looking at him). He’s charismatic, theatrical, confident, competitive and entirely aware of his own magnetism. But the interesting thing about a Leo is that beneath the performance is an enormous heart and a surprisingly intense need to be chosen. Ilya can command a room as we know, but ultimately the attention he actually cares about comes from one person.
The opposite to Ramona who is impulsive, Annie is considered. Virgo energy tends to observe before acting, notice what other people miss and maintain control even when there is plenty happening underneath the surface. There’s also a practicality to a Virgo. Their feelings need to be understood, organised or translated into action. Annie’s restraint and thoughtfulness give her that very Virgo quality of appearing composed while internally analysing absolutely everything.
A true romantic without being naïve about it all. Libra is ruled by Venus, so relationships, attraction, beauty and connection matter a lot – but Libra’s deeper struggle is often working out what they want independently of another person. Allie has charm and social ease, but so much of her journey revolves around love, partnership and defining herself outside of a relationship. Libra’s need to ask, ‘who am I when it’s just me?’
Scorpio: Damon Salvatore, The Vampire Diaries
Damon is absolutely a Scorpio. It almost requires no explanation, but I’ll indulge you. Sex, death, secrecy, jealousy, revenge, obsession, transformation. Shall I continue? Scorpio is intensely emotional but deeply uncomfortable with vulnerability, so tenderness often emerges disguised as cruelty, humour or indifference. When he loves someone, there is nothing casual about it. Scorpio doesn’t really do crushes, they rather do “I would burn the world down for you”.
Sagittarius: Effy Stonem, Skins
Effy is interesting because Scorpio feels like the obvious surface reading, but Sagittarius gets closer to her need to keep moving. A sagittarius resists containment; they wants experience, freedom, intensity and somewhere else to go next. Effy continually slips beyond people’s attempts to understand, possess or define her. She watches everyone else participate in the world while remaining slightly outside it. Her instinct is to escape.
Capricorn: Anwar Kharral, Skins
There’s something interesting in Anwar’s relationship with rules, identity and expectation. Capricorn is usually associated with structures, the things we’re told we’re supposed to do, the systems we inherit, and the tension between personal desire and obligation. Anwar is constantly navigating what he believes, what his family think, and what he actually does.
Aquarius: Stiles Stilinski, Teen Wolf
Stiles’ brain operates on a frequency nobody else has tuned into yet. Aquarius is the zodiac’s outsider, theorist and pattern-recogniser. While he can be unconventional, he is usually several steps ahead while appearing completely chaotic. Stiles notices connections other people dismiss, becomes obsessively interested in strange details. Underneath the eccentricity is ferocious loyalty, and once you’re one of his people, you’re his person forever. Lydia and Stiles forever (in our minds).
Pisces: Garrett Graham, Off Campus
Stereotyped as delicate, for Pisces it’s often about emotional permeability. He has the archetypal masculine athlete exterior, but underneath it he’s intuitive, empathetic and far more romantic than appearances suggest. Pisces absorbs what other people are feeling and often understands them before they’ve articulated it themselves. He’s essentially the loveable romantic disguised as a hockey player.
