The Patriots announced that running back Terrell Jennings has been placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.
Jennings began training camp on the non-football injury list, but had made progress in his position battle for the third running back spot. He appeared to be the front runner for that position, ahead of Lan Larrison and Jam Miller.
The 25-year-old running back played seven games with the Patriots last year after being elevated from the practice squad. Jennings finished last year on injured reserve.
New England signed two running backs on Thursday. They brought back JaMychal Hasty, a 5-foot-8, 205-pound tailback who appeared in 15 games for the Patriots in 2024.
Hasty was also with the Patriots in training camp last year before he was released. He has 121 carries for 479 yards and four touchdowns over five seasons with three different franchises.
The Patriots also signed Hasan Haskins, a 5-foot-8, 205-pound back who spent the past two seasons in a reserve role with the Chargers. Haskins appeared in 29 games over the past two years. He has 76 career carries for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Haskins has been assigned jersey number No. 26, which was the number Jennings wore last year.
Running back Myles Montgomery, who had also competing for the third running back spot, has also been placed on injured reserve, the Patriots announced.
Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson remain atop the Patriots’ depth chart at the running back position. Jennings, who assumed the RB3 role last year after Antonio Gibson went down with a knee injury, looked like he was on his way to reprising the role in 2026. He also was in the special teams mix as a kick returner.
He had two attempts for 59 yards last year and was among several players auditioning for the job during this training camp.
Jennings’s absence will impact the battle for the third running back spot. Larrison, who missed all of last season with an injury, has had a tight competition with rookie seventh-rounder Jam Miller this summer.
However, with the Patriots adding two more running backs to the room, it doesn’t appear the that the competition has been quite settled yet.
The Patriots open the preseason against Indianapolis on Thursday. They’ll have two more preseason games against Philadelphia and Cleveland. New England will host joint practices against Philadelphia next week.
