The Browns head coach liked his team’s effort at practice, but was not pleased with the amount of mistakes.
The Cleveland Browns hope to turn the page in 2026, and post a winning season. Cleveland has a new head coach in Todd Monken. Monken hasn’t been too pleased lately with what he sees in training camp.
“That was awful. That was sh**** football,” Monken said after watching practice Monday, per The Athletic.
Monken was not pleased by the penalties his team committed.
“That is going to get me fired up, and I have to own some of that. Obviously we haven’t coached it well enough. There were other aspects of the two minute, that got me fired up. Obviously it was a reflection of coaching,” Monken added, per the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Cleveland is working out who their starting quarterback will be. The Browns have young quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who came on late during the 2025 season. In 2025, Sanders tossed seven touchdowns and posted 1,400 passing yards.
“I’ve been highly impressed over the last four months that I’ve been around (Sanders) with how far he’s come as a player, and he’s only going to continue to get better,” Monken said, per The Athletic. “There’s a lot to take in when you’re installing. We got through the spring, then we were gone for six weeks, and then you start back up again in a new system.
“I think you’ll continue to see his operation and mechanics improve, and I think that’s the biggest part (that needs to improve) right now — his in and out of the huddle, getting to the line of scrimmage, eliminating that anxiety, his anxiety and my anxiety.”
Sanders has competition for the starting job, including Deshaun Watson.
“They’ve been great, and I think they’ve both improved — I’ve always said that about Shedeur,” Monken said. “But even over the last week or so, Deshaun has played better. He’s looked better, he’s made better decisions. I think some of that grows, like all of us, as they have success. Their confidence grows with the success they have every day.”
Cleveland opens NFL preseason games on Saturday. The Browns take on the Chicago Bears.
