While Pandora may be fictional, parts of India’s rainforests offer something surprisingly similar.
Hidden beneath dense canopies in the Western Ghats, decaying logs, tree trunks and fallen branches can emit a soft emerald glow after sunset, creating one of the country’s least-known natural spectacles.

The science behind the glow
The phenomenon is known as bioluminescence, the ability of living organisms to produce light through a natural chemical reaction.
In India’s forests, that glow comes from bioluminescent fungi that colonise dead and decaying wood during the monsoon. High humidity, persistent rainfall and damp forest floors create ideal conditions for these fungi to spread across fallen trunks, branches and stumps.

Naturalists sometimes refer to the phenomenon as “foxfire” or “fairy fire”.
Unlike fluorescent materials that require an external light source, these fungi generate their own light continuously through a biochemical process.
Scientists have identified several fungal species capable of bioluminescence, many belonging to the genus Mycena.
India is believed to host multiple glowing fungal species, although researchers continue to document and identify them.

1. Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, Maharashtra
If there’s one destination most closely associated with India’s glowing forests, it is Bhimashankar. Located in the northern Western Ghats, the sanctuary receives heavy monsoon rainfall that creates ideal conditions for bioluminescent fungi.
On moonless nights between July and September, patches of decaying wood can emit a faint green glow beneath the evergreen canopy.

Wildlife photographers often recommend waiting quietly in complete darkness for a few minutes before the glow becomes visible.

2. Chorla Ghat (Goa–Karnataka–Maharashtra Border)
One of the wettest regions in the Western Ghats, Chorla Ghat is known for its mist-covered forests and exceptional biodiversity. During the monsoon, damp fallen logs scattered across the forest floor provide the perfect habitat for glowing fungi.
Although sightings can never be guaranteed, the region has become a favourite among naturalists hoping to witness India’s closest equivalent to an Avatar-like forest.

3. Agumbe, Karnataka
Also called the “Cherrapunji of South India”, Agumbe is celebrated for its rainforests, king cobras and spectacular biodiversity.
The same heavy rainfall that supports these ecosystems also creates favourable conditions for luminous fungi.

4. Silent Valley National Park, Kerala
One of India’s last remaining stretches of undisturbed tropical rainforest, Silent Valley provides the cool, humid conditions that glowing fungi require.
While the phenomenon is not promoted as a tourist attraction, researchers have documented luminous fungal species across the Western Ghats ecosystem, including forests like Silent Valley where decaying wood remains abundant.

5. Bangaram Island, Lakshadweep
India’s most famous glowing beach owes its brilliance to microscopic marine plankton known as dinoflagellates. Whenever waves disturb the water, the organisms produce bright blue flashes, making the sea appear illuminated from within.

6. Mattu Beach, Karnataka
Near Udupi, Mattu Beach occasionally witnesses spectacular blooms of bioluminescent plankton after the monsoon. When sea conditions are favourable, gentle waves paint the shoreline in streaks of electric blue.

7. Goa’s Bioluminescent Beaches
Goa is famous for its sunsets, but on certain nights beaches such as Betalbatim, Colva and a few quieter stretches reveal another spectacle. Seasonal blooms of marine plankton can cause waves to glow blue after dark, although the phenomenon remains unpredictable.

Although both are examples of bioluminescence, the two phenomena are driven by entirely different organisms.

Why these glowing ecosystems matter
The glow may be what captures attention, but the organisms behind it play an important role in keeping ecosystems healthy.

Without fungi, forests would gradually accumulate dead organic matter, disrupting nutrient cycling and affecting countless other species.
Marine plankton are equally important. They form the base of coastal food webs, supporting fish, crustaceans and larger marine animals while contributing to healthy ocean ecosystems.
Protecting India’s natural light shows
These ecosystems survive only under specific environmental conditions.
Glowing fungi depend on cool, humid forests with abundant dead wood. Changes in rainfall, habitat fragmentation and the removal of fallen logs can reduce the conditions they need to thrive.
Similarly, coastal bioluminescence is influenced by water quality, seasonal plankton blooms and healthy marine ecosystems.
