Anupama Parameswaran turns to oversized silver jhumkas to elevate her simple silk sari

With her much anticipated Telugu-language comedy drama film Crazy Kalyanam set to hit screens soon, Anupama Parameswaran has begun its publicity. For a recent appearance, the actor took the less-is-more approach with her look. She ditched an overtly embellished occasion wear in favour of a simple Bordeaux-coloured silk tissue sari.

Woven in what appears to be luminous silk tissue, the rich wine-coloured sari gives the illusion of ‘dhup chav’ or shifting colours based on the effect of light on the fabric. While tissue silks are traditionally associated with ornate woven zari designs, this interpretation looks fresh and contemporary. With the exception of a thin red border, the lack of surface embroidery and embellishments shines the light on textile in entirety. In line with the sari’s simplicity, Parameswaran paired her sari with a simple sleeveless blouse with a scoop neck.

A tissue silk is particularly coveted for the complexity behind its creation. The fabric is traditionally woven by interlacing silk with metallic zari, producing its signature translucent glow and featherlight finish. Despite its delicate appearance, weaving tissue requires exceptional precision and craftsmanship, with artisans carefully balancing texture, lustre and structure. It is this combination of technical skill, heritage and rarity that has ensured tissue silk retains its status as one of India’s most prized handwoven textiles.
