Sanders watched from the bleachers at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus in Berea, Ohio, while his son directed the starting offense. He maintained a low profile and kept the focus on the Browns’ quarterback competition.
The visit carried significance because the younger Sanders asked his father to stay away from training camp as a rookie in 2025. Limited practice opportunities made him uncomfortable with the attention, and the Pro Football Hall of Famer respected the request.
The News-Herald’s Jeff Schudel shared a photograph on X, formerly Twitter, showing Sanders watching Thursday’s session. Schudel also reported that Sanders declined an interview and spoke with Browns head coach Todd Monken before practice.

The appearance unfolded under different circumstances. The former Colorado standout took first-team snaps while competing with Deshaun Watson for the starting job. His father watched the practice and then spoke with him afterward.
Sanders enters his second season after completing 56.6% of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions across eight appearances in 2025. He posted a 68.1 passer rating and later earned a Pro Bowl selection as a replacement.
Monken met with the elder Sanders before practice. Their conversation added a connection between Cleveland’s coach and the quarterback’s development at Colorado.
Thursday marked a departure from last season’s rookie camp, when limited opportunities defined the second-year signal-caller’s experience. He now has a genuine chance to earn the Browns starting quarterback job, and his father watched that pursuit firsthand without drawing attention away from the competition.
