Karnataka getting ready for Tamil Nadu CM C. Joseph Vijay’s possible visit

The Karnataka government is expecting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to arrive in Bengaluru on August 3 for holding consultations on the Cauvery issue, although there is no official confirmation on it yet.

While Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar told presspersons in New Delhi on Wednesday that Mr. Vijay has expressed his intention to meet him, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara said the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister may visit Bengaluru on August 3, adding a rider that the schedule was yet to be confirmed.

Mr. Shivakumar said, “Mr. Vijay has written to the Karnataka Chief Secretary and has also spoken to me over phone. I have extended him the respect he deserves and invited him to the meeting in Bengaluru. It is our duty to receive guests visiting our State with due courtesy, and all necessary arrangements have been made to receive him.”

Visiting Cauvery basin

Mr. Shivakumar said he had requested Mr. Vijay to personally see the situation in the Cauvery basin of Karnataka that is reeling under drought. “I have also informed him that the government will make the necessary arrangements for his areal visit to see the situation. He should witness the ground realities,” he said.

Mr. Vijay’s proposed visit comes at a time when Karnataka’s Cauvery basin is witnessing protests by farmers groups over the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s order to the State to release water to Tamil Nadu.
