Tony Romo gave last week’s field sobriety test all he had, newly released bodycam footage shows.
Unfortunately for Romo, it wasn’t enough — at least for now.
The former NFL quarterback was arrested last week following a golf tournament in Wisconsin and charged with an OWI. Romo was initially pulled over for “unsafe passing” on a Milwaukee highway, told the officer he was coming from a golf course and insisted he had consumed “zero” drinks before asking to call his attorney.

When asked to step out of the vehicle, the current NFL CBS analyst responded, “Because I’m coming from a golf course, you think I’m drunk?”
Spicy! But, here’s where the temp really cranks up …
Police then detained Romo and transported him to a nearby station to conduct field sobriety tests, which, frankly, look like the hardest tasks in the world to complete, much less pass.
Romo, apparently, did NOT pass them given he was cuffed and detained shortly after, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.
“Sorry, two back surgeries, I need to stand here,” Romo said before limbering up in a parking garage last week.

Amazing. Footage later showed Romo after performing the tests, which included the standard ‘put one foot in front of the other and walk in a straight line.’
He appeared to do it just fine, but that wasn’t the case.
“Did I pass this test?” he asked at one point before getting cuffed. “No I didn’t, huh?”
Peak TV from Romo in that parking garage. I’ve given him a lot of crap over the years for his shtick in the booth, but this reeled me right back in. I’ve never seen a man get down on start to stretch like he’s about to run the 40 before a sobriety test. Never in my life.

Credit to Romo for giving it his all, though. Some folks mail it in. Not Romo. If he’s going to start a task, he’s going to try and do it to the best of his ability. That’s what four-time Pro Bowl quarterbacks do.
You play to win the game. A great man once said that, and it’s true in all facets of life — not just sports. Romo’s back was against the wall here after being stuffed in the back of a tiny police car on the drive over, and he needed to work up a quick sweat to get the juices flowing before the lights came on.
I get it. The guy had two back surgeries — as he told the other officers — and a slew of other injuries over a 14-year NFL career. You think he can just fire the engines on command anymore? Don’t think so.
P.S.: I’m probably gonna take some flack for this, but whatever. I think Romo got railroaded here. He seems fine. I think he passed the tests with flying colors, and they still booked him.
“We did find a couple shooters,” the officer told Romo in the garage after searching his car.
“Were they drank?” he asked. “I don’t think any of them were drank.”

Yeah, this case is far from over.
Romo was eventually cited for first-offense operating while intoxicated and refusing to submit to a chemical test. He was released and is due in court on Sept. 21.
