A 19-year-old medical aspirant from Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar district allegedly died by suicide after struggling with depression over her NEET (UG) results. Her family claimed the stress was compounded by the irregularities related to the entrance examination.
Ankita Sangale was found hanging at her home on Saturday when no one else was present, police said. A case has been registered by the police in connection with the death and a probe has been initiated.
According to her family, the young woman had aspired to become a doctor and had diligently prepared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate), or NEET (UG). They said while she scored well in the original examination held in May this year, she managed to score only 166 marks in the re-examination held on June 21.
She had been under extreme stress ever since, her father said. According to him, the teenager failed to clear the cut-off for the NEET (UG) re-examination by 11 marks.
Ankita became anxious following reports of irregularities in the initial examination, her father said.
The incident came on the same day Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned following nationwide protests over the handling of the NEET controversy.
A purported suicide note has been recovered from the scene. In it, she repeatedly asked them not to blame themselves for her death and expressed regret that she could not fulfil her dream despite making sacrifices for the examination.
“Mom and Dad, you gave me so much love, but I could not fulfill even a single one of your wishes. Please forgive me.” she wrote. “None of you are responsible for my suicide.”
She also urged her family not to grieve after her death, writing that she had already sacrificed a great deal for NEET but could not achieve her goal.
