India on Monday summoned Ukraine’s Ambassador to New Delhi after a merchant vessel carrying four Indian nationals came under attack at the port of Odesa over the weekend, escalating diplomatic concerns over the safety of Indian seafarers in the Black Sea conflict zone.
The move comes two days after the MV AGN Ragnar was struck while docked at Odesa. According to the Indian Embassy in Kyiv, two of the four Indian crew members have been confirmed safe, while information on the remaining two is still awaited as search and rescue operations continue.
The Ministry of External Affairs had on Sunday issued an advisory urging Indian nationals to carefully assess security risks before accepting jobs on commercial vessels operating in conflict-affected waters.
The attack marks the third such incident involving ships with Indian crew in about a week. Since July 18, five Indian seafarers have been killed in attacks in the Black Sea region, prompting New Delhi to step up diplomatic engagement over the safety of its citizens.
