The publication highlighted a beloved Cambridge destination in its list of the most iconic ice cream shops in every state. Here’s why it earned the honor.

Business Insider recently named “the most iconic ice cream shop in every state.”

For Massachusetts, the 45-year-old Cambridge ice cream shop Toscanini’s came out on top.

“Toscanini’s has become one of the country’s most celebrated independent ice cream shops, with a reputation that extends far beyond its two locations in Massachusetts,” the article said.

The ice cream shop first opened at 899 Main St. in Central Square in 1981 and opened a second location in Kendall Square at 159 First St. in 2018.

“Tosci’s,” as it’s often called, makes all its ice cream in house with flavors ranging from local favorites such as blackberry fluff and maple creamee to nods to international choices, including Kulfi, a traditional Indian ice cream.

This accolade is just one of dozens Toscanini’s has received over the years, including being named “The World’s Best Ice Cream” by The New York Times.

Business Insider determined the most iconic shops by identifying “longtime local institutions, award-winning or nationally revered spots, and shops whose signature flavors have become closely associated with their states and communities,” the article said.

Overall, Toscanini’s is among many shops that “offer more than just a good scoop.”
