A 30-year-old Border Security Force (BSF) jawan from Bihar died after coming into contact with a live electric current while on duty near the India-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, triggering grief in his native village and allegations of foul play from his family.
The deceased, Chandan Singh, a resident of Jawayat village in Munger district’s Shampur police station area, was serving as a generator operator with the BSF. According to his family, he suffered a fatal electric shock following an alleged short circuit while performing his duties.
Chandan had joined the BSF in 2014 and was posted near the border in Ferozepur. His body will be sent to his native village after post-mortem and completion of official formalities. The last rites are expected to be held after the mortal remains reach Bihar.
The news of his death has left his family and the entire village in mourning. Chandan was the youngest of three brothers. His father, Brajesh Singh, is a farmer, while his two elder brothers are also engaged in agriculture.
Married seven years ago, Chandan is survived by his wife, Anju Devi, a teacher at a government high school in Banka district. The couple had no children.
His wife has alleged that her husband’s death was not merely an accident and has demanded a fair investigation. She claimed that Chandan had repeatedly told her he was being harassed by a senior officer belonging to the Mahadalit community and had even considered resigning from the force because of the alleged harassment.
“On Wednesday night, I received a call from the BSF headquarters informing me about his death. My husband had earlier told me that he was being tortured by a senior officer. I want an impartial investigation into the circumstances leading to his death,” she said.
The BSF has not yet issued any official statement on the allegations made by the family.
Relatives, neighbours and well-wishers have been gathering at Chandan’s home to offer condolences as the family awaits the arrival of his mortal remains.
