BBC’s Mark Chapman mocks Gary Lineker live on TV before England’s World Cup match

Mark Chapman couldn’t help but take a playful swipe at his predecessor Gary Lineker during the BBC’s broadcast of England’s World Cup semi-final clash with Argentina this evening.

The moment came when the panel was discussing Jude Bellingham’s impressive tournament, with a graphic showing the midfielder’s six goals in North America placing him among England’s top scorers of all time.

Lineker’s name appeared prominently on that list, which prompted pundit Micah Richards to quip: “One thing I don’t like on that list, another graphic that’s got Gary Lineker on there!”

Chapman’s response was instant: “Gary who? Joke! Joke! Before everybody piles on. Joke, goodness me!”

Lineker had been set to front the BBC’s World Cup coverage this summer, but the former England captain departed Match of the Day in May 2025 following intense backlash over a controversial social media post.

His exit came after a remarkable 25-year stint presenting the flagship football programme.

Chapman now shares hosting duties on MOTD with Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan, stepping into some seriously big shoes.

The former World Cup Golden Boot winner hasn’t publicly addressed Chapman’s cheeky remark.

Richards, it’s worth noting, still collaborates with Lineker on The Rest Is Football podcast, which Netflix is broadcasting throughout the tournament.

The exchange took place ahead of the match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with the studio atmosphere clearly relaxed.

Richards revealed that Lineker had actually messaged him during the broadcast, joking: “He’s just text me now but he’s dropping down the table, thank God for that!”

Chapman’s quick-fire quip about not knowing who Lineker was drew hearty laughter from fellow pundits Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart.

The lead presenter was clearly keen to make absolutely certain viewers understood he was having a laugh, repeating the word “joke” multiple times before anyone could take offence.

Chapman has fronted BBC Sport since 2020 and is known for his engaging presenting style.
