One person was killed and four others were injured in a suspected IED blast targeting an Assam Rifles vehicle near Sukhovi in Nagaland on Monday, according to initial reports.
An operation is underway in the area, and further details are awaited.
The incident marks the second attack targeting Assam Rifles personnel in the Northeast in less than a week.
On July 6, two personnel of the 40th Battalion of the Assam Rifles were killed after suspected militants ambushed a convoy in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.
The attack led to a prolonged exchange of fire and triggered a large-scale search operation in the area.
The deceased were identified as Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman CM Singh, who was reportedly driving one of the convoy vehicles. Both sustained critical injuries in the ambush and later succumbed despite receiving medical assistance, officials said.
ASSAM RIFLES: KEY PLAYER IN NORTH EAST’S SECURITY
The Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force, has been a key component of security operations in the Northeast for decades.
The force is responsible for guarding the India-Myanmar border, conducting counter-insurgency operations and assisting in maintaining internal security across the region.
Due to its extensive deployment in the Northeast, Assam Rifles personnel have frequently been targeted by insurgent groups operating in the region.
In November last year, four Assam Rifles personnel were injured after militants opened fire on a patrolling team in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district along the India-Myanmar border.
The ambush took place near Border Pillar No. 87, close to Saibol village, during a routine patrol.
The incident came months after Assam Rifles personnel killed 10 suspected militants in an encounter in Manipur’s Chandel district.
