Melbourne Victory sign Wales international defender Tom Lockyer

Melbourne Victory have completed the signing of experienced Welsh defender Tom Lockyer ahead of the 2026-27 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

The 31-year-old joins Giovanni Savarese’s side after an accomplished career in England that included captaining Luton Town during the club’s recent spell in the Premier League, a club where he became a firm fan favourite.

A 16-time international for Wales, Lockyer made global headlines in 2023 when he collapsed on the field whilst playing for Luton Town in the Premier League after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Paramedics on the scene ultimately saved Lockyer’s life and after a two-year period away from the game the Welsh international eventually returned to professional football with boyhood club Bristol Rovers, the team where he started his career in 2013.

Lockyer said he was looking forward to beginning the next stage of his career in Melbourne.

“I am thrilled to have joined Melbourne Victory and cannot wait to get this next chapter of my career underway in such an amazing city.

“This opportunity excites me a lot, as I look to experience new things and challenge myself in a fresh environment.

He concluded: “Now it is time to get to work and be ready for every battle ahead.”

Lockyer heads to Victory with 16 senior international appearances for Wales and was part of his country’s squads at UEFA EURO 2020 and the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup.

His time with the Hatters culminated in promotion to the Premier League in 2023 where he made 14 top-flight appearances for Luton before suffering the medical incident.

Fully recovered from the incident, Lockyer is back thriving in professional football and brought up his 300th club appearance for Bristol Rovers before seeking a new challenge abroad.

“We are especially pleased to have brought a player of Tom’s calibre, courage and leadership qualities to the A-League and to Melbourne Victory,” Melbourne Victory Director of Football John Didulica said.

“He brings the experience of captaining a team in the Premier League and playing more than a century of matches in one of the world’s most demanding leagues, the Championship, as well as representing his country at the highest of levels.

“We are excited by the hunger that Tom has for a new challenge, and it is fantastic that he can bring this energy to Victory.”

Lockyer’s signing came at the end of what had been a busy week for Victory after they’d previously announced the signing of German central defender Philipp Ziereis on a two-year deal.

Having already announced the signings of both Harry Shillington and Harrison Sawyer, the club also revealed academy graduate Franco Lino has extended his loan spell with Victory for a further season.

Meanwhile first-team players Charles Nduka, Jack Warshawsky, Brendan Hamill and Jack Duncan have all signed new contracts whilst Mikey Ghossaini and Jack Mihailidis have also put pen-to-paper on their first A-League deals.
