Heaps Good Shorts – a night of short film celebration at The Mercury, Friday 17 July

The Mercury and the West Torrens Library present an evening of South Australian filmmaking talent at The Mercury for the second year following up on the 2025 horror themed Firstival event. Firstival runs all July and is a  ‘festival of firsts’ held across more than 130 South Australian public libraries which seeks to encourage people to try something new, learn new skills and engage with their communities through a range of creative and cultural experiences.

This year’s Heaps Good Shorts includes a wide range of short films from emerging and established creators, including young filmmakers, First Nations storytellers and award-winning artists. There is a mix of genres and styles, from drama, romantic comedy and documentary through to experimental works, music videos and horror. The event provides a unique opportunity to discover local talent, celebrate creative achievement and connect with South Australia’s vibrant screen community. For some of the filmmakers the event will be the first time they will see their projects on the big screen.

The Mercury and the West Torrens Library proudly continue creating meaningful opportunities for South Australian filmmakers to share their work with local audiences. Sarah Lancaster CEO of The Mercury said: “Heaps Good Shorts is a wonderful celebration of the depth, diversity and creativity of South Australia’s filmmaking community. The Mercury is proud to provide a platform for local storytellers at every stage of their careers, from emerging voices to award-winning filmmakers. Through our partnership with the West Torrens Library and Firstival, we’re creating opportunities for audiences to discover incredible local talent, experience a broad range of stories and genres, and celebrate the strength of our screen sector together. We look forward to welcoming the community for an entertaining and inspiring night of South Australian short films.”

The program of Heaps Good Shorts is proudly supported by a network of local collaborators including Flinders University with the Audience Choice Award sponsored by Adelaide Film Festival.

Heaps Good Shorts screens at The Mercury on Friday 17 July at 6:30pm. Tickets are free, however bookings are essential via The Mercury website here: https://themercury.org.au/special_events/heaps-good-shorts-2026/
