By noon, the Barmer–Batadu road in Rajasthan begins to shimmer under the desert sun.
Temperatures here often soar above 45°C during summer. Buses carrying workers, families and traders cut through the heat. Dust-covered trucks rumble past, while motorcyclists stop wherever they can find a patch of shade.
Amid this harsh landscape stands 77-year-old Thana Ram Kadwasara.
Beside him are bottles of cold drinking water.
For the past 21 years, he has made it his mission to ensure that no traveller on this stretch of road goes thirsty. In a place where relief from the heat can be hard to find, his simple act of kindness has become a lifeline for countless people.
A daily act of service
A resident of Hudo Ki Dhani village in Barmer district, Thana Ram has turned offering water into a daily ritual.
Every morning, he fills containers and bottles with drinking water and keeps them cool for travellers crossing the desert route. Bus passengers reach out for a bottle as they pass by. Taxi drivers stop for a quick drink. Labourers walking long distances pause for a moment of relief before continuing their journey.
For many, it is a small gesture that makes a difficult day a little easier.
For Thana Ram, it is simply part of his routine.
Many have called him a reminder of what selfless service looks like. Others have affectionately named him “Water Baba” and “Angel of the Desert”. Photograph: (Videograb-desertslife-Image enhanced with AI)
There is no organisation behind the effort, no team of volunteers and no fixed schedule. It is one man showing up every day because he believes someone, somewhere along the road, may need a drink of water.
That belief has remained unchanged for more than two decades.
Kindness without conditions
A recent Instagram video shared by Mohan Baliyara brought national attention to Thana Ram’s work.
What stands out in the video is its simplicity.
There is no signboard announcing his service. No donation box sits beside the water. No request for contributions.
Long before anyone noticed him online, Thana Ram was already there, quietly serving travellers day after day.
21 years of giving
For more than two decades, he has offered water freely to truck drivers, daily-wage workers, tourists and pedestrians, expecting nothing in return.
His reward is knowing that someone can continue their journey a little more comfortably.
Since the video surfaced online, thousands of people have praised his efforts. Many have called him a reminder of what selfless service looks like. Others have affectionately named him “Water Baba” and “Angel of the Desert”.
Yet the recognition only highlights something local communities have long known: everyday acts of care often come from ordinary people who rarely seek attention.
Thana Ram is one of them.
At 77, when many would choose to slow down, he continues to stand beside the roadside under the desert sun, handing out water to strangers he may never meet again.
There is no campaign attached to his work and no grand mission statement.
Just a simple principle he has followed for 21 years: no one passing through should stay thirsty.
