An Adelaide croissant has risen to the top, with Adelaide’s Finest Bakeries & Patisserie earning major state and national recognition for its award-winning pastry.
The bakery and patisserie teams behind Adelaide’s Finest Supermarkets, which includes its Frewville and Pasadena stores, recently took home an incredible 18 awards at the Baking Association Awards of South Australia.
Among the biggest wins was the Margaret Davey Perpetual Trophy and their croissant judged Champion Pastry in South Australia. The win earned the team the right to compete at the national Baking Association of Australia Awards on the Gold Coast.
Now, the team has now gone on to secure national recognition, with the Baking Association of Australia naming Adelaide’s Finest Bakeries & Patisserie the winner of Champion Product of Show, Champion Sourdough Loaf and Champion Viennoiserie at the 2026 National Artisan Baking Competition.
The team started at 4am preparing the batch of croissants that would fly to the Gold Coast for the national competition, with Head Pastry Chef Tharindu leading the patisserie team behind the now award-winning pastry.
“The secret ingredient in Adelaide’s Finest croissants is what? Ask our head patisserie chef, Tharindu, next time you’re in the store,” they shared online.
“We definitely don’t call him the ‘croissant whisperer’ when he’s not looking.”
At the SA Baking Awards in May, Adelaide’s Finest claimed first place across categories including Whole Grain Vienna, Rye Sourdough, Flavoured Sourdough, Ciabatta, White Sourdough, Apprentice 4 Strand Plait, Gâteaux and Croissant.
“Our patisserie team won the Margaret Davey Perpetual Trophy at this year’s SA Baking Association Awards,” Adelaide’s Finest shared in a blog.
“Our croissant was judged best pastry in South Australia and as such, earned the right to compete at nationals this week. We love what we do!,” they also said online.
The team also placed across a range of categories, including White Vienna, Fruit Loaf, White Square Loaf, High Top Grain, Multigrain Cobb, Vanilla Slice, Cinnamon Scroll and Gourmet Decorated Donut.
Behind the broader bakery success is Head Baker Peter, who joined the business with what Adelaide’s Finest described as the simple mandate to “fix our sourdough.”
Anyone who bakes knows sourdough can never be fixed forever, as it is a living, breathing and growing thing. But under Peter’s leadership, alongside the senior bakers and wider production team, Adelaide’s Finest says its sourdough is now better than ever.
The team’s results also included Champion Bread for its ciabatta, while apprentice Lemmel Glover took out 1st Place in the apprentice section for his Four Strand Plait.
Adelaide’s Finest also acknowledged the work of its bakery teams at Pasadena and Frewville, its patisserie team, Head Pastry Chef Tharindu, Head Baker Peter, senior bakers Hannah and Hannah, Rebecca Tracey and Head of Production Rob Trimboli.
This shopping store bakery is putting Adelaide baking on the national stage, one buttery, golden, flaky croissant at a time.
