The 28-year-old man from Haverhill was killed early Sunday morning in a wrong-way crash on I-93.
Riley Sergi, a 28-year-old Haverhill man, was the driver killed early Sunday morning when an SUV heading the wrong way on Interstate 93 in Boston collided head on with his car, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, Antone Carvalho, 81, of Somerset, will appear in court at a yet-to-be-determined date, authorities said. District Attorney Kevin Hayden said the investigation is ongoing and that charges will be determined.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Sergi, and I assure them that the investigation of this tragic crash will be careful and thorough,” he said.
The multi-vehicle crash happened on I-93 northbound near Exit 15A, State Police said.
A preliminary investigation found that Carvalho was driving a Cadillac Escalade when he wrongly entered I-93 north from Exit 15B.
As Carvalho drove the wrong way, a driver of an Audi A4 and a Honda Odyssey carrying a family of four attempted to avoid him and collided with each other, police said.
According to police, Carvalho continued to drive the wrong way and ultimately collided head on with a Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Sergi.
Authorities said first responders brought the family of four to a Boston-area hospital. There were no updates on the family Monday. Police did not say if anyone in the Audi was injured.
