Anticipating heavy monsoon rains and the risk of landslides, the Kodagu district administration has imposed a month-long ban on the movement of heavy goods vehicles across the district from June 10 to July 9.

The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the Regional Transport Authority S.J. Somashekar, is aimed at ensuring public safety and protecting roads and other public infrastructure during the monsoon season.

The restrictions apply to all timber and sand transport vehicles, goods carriers with a registered weight exceeding 18.5 tonnes, bullet tankers, ship cargo containers, and long-chassis multi-axle trucks

According to a press release, heavy rainfall often weakens road shoulders and triggers landslides along vulnerable stretches in the hilly district. The continuous movement of overloaded vehicles further damages roads, road cave-ins and traffic accidents.

Essential services, however, have been exempted from the restrictions. Vehicles transporting LPG and fuel, milk tankers, government vehicles, school and college buses, and public transport buses, including multi-axle coaches, will be permitted to operate.

Round-the-clock checkposts will be established at Kushalnagar and Sampaje on National Highway 275 to ensure enforcement. Police and transport department personnel have been directed to conduct mobile patrolling and take action against violators.

The restrictions have been imposed under provisions of the Karnataka Police Act, the Disaster Management Act, the Motor Vehicles Act and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in an effort to minimise monsoon-related risks in Kodagu.
