With the Cleveland Browns having recently conducted OTAs, the team is preparing for the 2026 season, and some of the conversation has centered on the quarterback room. As the Browns’ quarterback battle is still brewing, head coach Todd Monken would be asked about the team potentially adding Texas Tech football quarterback Brendan Sorsby in the supplemental draft.
Sorsby has been in the news due to his gambling scandal, but also the fight to regain his eligibility for 2026 after the NCAA denied it due to his previous actions. Monken would explain why he would he believes Cleveland is not “in a position to want to go down that road” and how it’s a “slippery slope.”
“That’s not even come across my desk. I don’t think we’re in a position to want to go down that road. That’s my opinion, that’s not Andrew’s, and I like the quarterbacks that we have. I think that’s a slippery slope when you go down that, irrespective of talent, right? Terms of the situation he’s put himself in, we all know what that is,” Monken said Monday, via Mary Kay Cabot.
“He put himself in that situation, and we’ve seen in other sports with players that have been banned for life from playing in professional sports,” Monken continued. “I think that’s a slippery slope to go down that road. Again, that’s a question for Andrew and for management, but for my end of it, kind of a tough, tough angle to go down that road and think that that’s going to be your franchise quarterback if he’s ever eligible to even play in the NFL.”

Todd Monken is comfortable with the Browns’ quarterback room
With the Browns’ quarterback room featuring Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel, Monken feels comfortable with the players he has, especially with how Sorsby’s situation is still up in the air. Currently in court to fight for his eligibility, there was a hearing Monday “without a ruling from the judge,” per Ross Dellenger.
The hearing in Lubbock over Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility concludes without a ruling from the judge, which was mostly expected. Jeffrey Kessler and counsel just exited the court room, per this report. https://t.co/K6jkIvwRck

It remains to be seen what happens in Sorsby’s case and who the starting quarterback for Cleveland will be.
