For many South Australians, a trip to Kangaroo Island is a bucket-list getaway, but there is one hurdle that consistently pops up when planning the trek across the Backstairs Passage: the travel costs. Between the SeaLink ferry tickets and the road trip down the Fleurieu Peninsula, getting there can often feel like a huge barrier.
But what if that barrier was completely erased?
Sea Dragon Kangaroo Island, described as “Australia’s answer to an African safari lodge”, has just launched a massive winter initiative to take care of your travel expenses. If you book fof three nights or more between now and September 30, 2026, the luxury accomodation will completely cover the journey, including SeaLink ferry tickets and up to $150 in fuel reimbursements to get you to Cape Jervis and back.
The motivation behind the promotion? Sea Dragon simply wants locals to see the island during its most spectacular season.
“Kangaroo Island is at its most spectacular from May to September, it’s green, it’s lush, and yet most people visit in the summer months,” says Alice from Sea Dragon. “Wildlife around the island is much more active when it’s cooler and we also have the whale migration in full swing which you can often see from the lodge itself! Just this week while on a walk with guests, we saw a mother whale and her baby. So our motivation for the free travel offer is to showcase Kangaroo Island at its most beautiful and also encourage the many South Australians who haven’t visited the island, to come and visit us.”
Nestled on a 250-acre private coastal property at Pink Bay, Sea Dragon offers an immersive nature experience that feels worlds away from the daily grind. Two-thirds of the property is a designated protected wildlife conservancy, meaning guests don’t even have to leave the estate to experience the island’s iconic fauna.
“We call ourselves a safari lodge because of our incredible wildlife that calls Sea Dragon home,” Alice explains. “You will see countless kangaroos and wallabies, have the chance to spot some of our 35 different bird species, hopefully spot one of our many echidna and not to mention the marine wildlife that loves to relax in the calm waters of Pink Bay. Even if you’re not a wildlife lover, it’s a beautiful place to just unwind and reconnect with each other – away from the demands of everyday life. Of an afternoon, you can nestle around our beautiful fireplace in our guest lounge with a glass of South Aussie red and watch this all unfold around you; or when the sun goes down, stargaze under our fire pit with a warming drink.”
If you’re looking to escape the city, this impressive free travel promotion gives you two options: a classic self-drive road trip, or ‘the experience package’.
If you love the freedom of a classic road trip, the first option allows you to take your own car across on the SeaLink ferry. Sea Dragon will cover your return vehicle and passenger ferry tickets, plus up to $150 of your fuel costs. This package includes an ocean-view room, breakfast, dinner with included beer and wine, and one scheduled lodge activity per day.
If you truly want to unwind and view your own backyard from a new perspective, you can drive your car to Cape Jervis, park it on the mainland (with the $150 fuel reimbursement still applicable), and hop on the ferry as a foot passenger. Once you hit the island, Sea Dragon takes care of all your transfers, luxury touring, and curated activities. As part of this winter promotion, Experience Package bookings also receive a complimentary room upgrade to the next available category and a welcome bottle of sparkling Kangaroo Island wine on arrival, alongside daily breakfast, dinner, and drinks.
For families, the deal gets even sweeter. Every winter, Sea Dragon runs a “Teens Travel Free” promotion. If one or two teenagers (ages 12–17) share a Superior Ocean View Suite or Luxury Ocean View Villa with two full-paying adults, they stay for free. Best of all, this offer can be combined with the free travel promotion when booking the Experience Package.
Whether you spend your days tracking echidnas or your afternoons nestled around the guest lounge fireplace with a glass of South Australian red, winter is officially the prime time to cross KI off your list.
The free travel offer is valid for new bookings made by June 30 for stays between May 1 and September 30, 2026 (minimum age permitted on site is 12).
