Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand praises force after peaceful Bakrid and Assembly elections

Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand, IPS, has issued a message of appreciation to all ranks of the city police force following the peaceful conclusion of two major events held simultaneously — the Assembly elections and Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha) celebrations.

In an official communication addressed to personnel, Commissioner Nand praised the force for its professionalism, discipline and dedication during the high-pressure period. He said the coordinated efforts of officers and staff played a key role in maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety and preserving communal harmony across the city.

“The peaceful conduct of the festival and effective enforcement of law relating to Namaz, sacrifice, and other associated activities would not have been possible without your perseverance, discipline, and unwavering commitment to duty. Your coordinated efforts ensured public safety, communal harmony, and strict adherence to the rule of law throughout the city,” he wrote in the message.

The Commissioner also urged officers to continue working with the same commitment in the days ahead, reiterating Kolkata Police’s “zero tolerance” approach towards crimes against women and its broader focus on crime prevention to keep the city safe and citizen-friendly.

Nand, a senior IPS officer, was appointed Kolkata Police Commissioner earlier this year amid heightened political and administrative focus on law and order ahead of the Assembly elections. His appointment came at a crucial time as the city prepared for a politically charged electoral season and a series of major public gatherings and festivals.

The recent Assembly elections in West Bengal witnessed extensive security arrangements across Kolkata and other parts of the state, with authorities deploying additional personnel, surveillance measures and rapid response teams to prevent violence and ensure smooth polling. Bakrid celebrations were also conducted under heightened security vigil, given the large public gatherings across several sensitive areas of the city.
