Red Sox manager Chad Tracy outlined a number of injury updates for key players on Friday.
The most notable news was Trevor Story’s sports hernia surgery, which will sideline him for approximately 6-10 weeks. But Tracy did issue a pair of updates for ace Garrett Crochet and outfielder Roman Anthony as well.
Neither has a clear timetable for a return at this point, but both could still be back in the lineup relatively soon.
Crochet will throw some pitches this weekend, and is scheduled for a live batting practice session next week, which will be a key milestone in his individual timeline. If both throwing sessions go well, he could be on track to return fairly soon after that.
As for Anthony, Boston is in a “wait and see” period. He didn’t reinjure anything, but is having issues tolerating the pain after attempting to swing a bat last week.
“Nothing new with Roman other than to say he did re-see our specialist and also a second opinion,” Tracy said. “There’s nothing new. The healing is OK. It’s just going to be a matter of that motion, swinging, when he feels like he can do it.”
Anthony initially felt he’d be able to return pretty soon after he was eligible to come off the 10-day IL. However that has proven not to be the case; he hasn’t played since May 4 with the sprain.
Even before the ailment arose, Anthony wasn’t particularly hot offensively, so the extended IL stint only adds to his sputtering start to 2026. He’ll need to feel fully healthy in order to regain the confidence swinging the bat which he displayed in 2025, his rookie year with the Red Sox.
Crochet seems to be the leading horse in terms of his return from IL, as he’s progressing normally at this point. However, Boston has shown plenty of capabilities in its pitching staff even without him. Sonny Gray, Payton Tolle, and Connelly Early have each put up strong starts in his absence, helping the offense by pitching late into games and not giving up many runs.
Of course, Crochet’s return will be welcome. He was the American League Cy Young runner-up in 2025 and has been dominant since the Red Sox acquired him last offseason.
Both Crochet and Anthony are cornerstones of the present and future Red Sox, who at 22-27 can’t afford to be missing top stars for much longer.
Boston takes on the Twins in a weekend series at Fenway slated Friday-Sunday, though weather could be a factor in the latter game of the series.
