Western Sydney: Car snaps in two, catches alight in Villawood after crash with power pole on Hume Highway

A man had a lucky escape overnight after his car split in half and caught alight after a dramatic crash with a power pole.

Emergency services were contacted about 9.30pm on Sunday after reports of a fiery crash on the Hume Highway at Villawood, western Sydney.

After splitting in two, the rear of the sedan collided with a hatchback. The rest of the car was 200 metres from the pole.

The 24-year-old driver escaped the vehicle and was helped by passers-by until paramedics arrived.

He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with burns and suspected fractures.

The second driver, a 48-year-old man, was taken to hospital for assessment.

The force of the crash was so powerful that it snapped the pole in half and brought down power lines.

The Hume Highway was blocked for four hours.

An investigation into the crash is underway. Police are asking any witnesses to contact Bankstown Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
