AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday appealed to NEET aspirants not to take extreme steps amid stress and anxiety following the cancellation of the medical entrance examination.
Addressing students through a video message, Kejriwal said he understood the pressure aspirants go through while preparing for competitive examinations as he himself had appeared for IIT and UPSC exams.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate) – meant for aspirants seeking admissions in medical colleges – held on May 3 was cancelled following irregularities in the examination process, triggering huge protests from several quarters across the country. The government has announced a re-test on June 21.
“Reports are coming from all around and many students are sending messages and making phone calls saying they are in depression and stress because of the NEET exam cancellation,” he said.
Kejriwal said reports of four student suicides had emerged from Goa, Sikar in Rajasthan, Delhi, and Lakhimpur in Uttar Pradesh. He said he had also visited the family of a NEET aspirant in Goa who died by suicide.
“I understand your anxiety. I was thinking how I would have felt if my competitive exam paper had been cancelled during my time. But stress and suicide are not the solution,” he said.
Appealing to students not to take any extreme step, Kejriwal urged aspirants battling depression and stress to directly share their feelings with him through comments or direct messages.
“You can directly reach out to me. We can together explore how to fix the system,” he said.
Kejriwal also asked students to send suggestions and solutions regarding the examination system, saying educated youngsters could help find a way forward collectively.
“Don’t take extreme steps. Send me your suggestions. Together, we will find a solution,” he added.
