DP World Tour Championship wins major event award at MESIA
The DP World Tour Championship has been named Major Global Sport Event of the Year at the Middle East Sport Industry Awards.
The award was presented in Dubai on Wednesday night, recognising the 2025 edition of the tournament at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
The season-ending event drew the largest crowd ever recorded for a golf tournament in the UAE. Spectators watched England’s Matt Fitzpatrick beat Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy in a play-off to win the title.
Organisers said the tournament generated $60 million in additional economic impact. More than 30 per cent of ticket buyers came from outside the UAE, adding to the event’s role in bringing international visitors to Dubai.
The 2025 championship also introduced new staging features, including a “Magic Sky” roof on the first tee. The Earth Lounge returned at the 16th hole, using hydrogen power and sustainable materials.
The tournament also hosted the second edition of the DP World Tour’s Supplier Sustainability Awards, which recognised work being done across the Tour’s global schedule.
It is the second year in a row the DP World Tour Championship has won the Major Global Sport Event of the Year award.
The DP World Tour was also highly commended in the Sports Organisation of the Year category. The recognition followed a 2025 season in which 163,000 spectators attended the final two UAE-based play-off events.
