Community basketball takes centre court in Dubai

Dubai’s Community Basketball Championship starts on Friday at Champs Plaza, bringing together 12 teams from different communities living in the UAE.

The tournament runs until June 12 and includes teams representing Canada, the United States, Senegal, Lebanon, the Philippines, Uzbekistan, Syria, Palestine, China, Türkiye, Spain and Egypt.

It is organised by the UAE Talent Support and Sports Services Committee. Champs Academy, Dubai Sports Council and the UAE Basketball Association are also involved.

The event has been set up to give community basketball more space in the UAE calendar, while showing the mix of nationalities who live and play sport in the country.

Organisers have allocated AED 50,000 in prize money for the winning teams. Fans will also have the chance to win from a separate AED 50,000 pot through raffles and activities during the championship.

The programme will include family entertainment around the matches, with organisers aiming to give the event a stronger community feel.

Basketball continues to grow across Dubai’s schools, academies and community leagues. Events like this help give players from different backgrounds a competitive setting, while keeping the atmosphere open to families and supporters.
