NETFLIX reflects on decade of growth in Australia and worldwide

Netflix is looking back on ten years as a global streamer, launching a new campaign exploring the cultural and economic impact of its productions worldwide.

The company has unveiled The Netflix Effect, a new initiative examining how Netflix films and series have impacted jobs, local economies, tourism, music, fandom and wider pop culture since expanding from around 60 countries to more than 190 in 2016.

While the campaign takes a broad international focus, Australian titles including Boy Swallows Universe, Heartbreak High, Apple Cider Vinegar, Territory and The Survivors remain part of Netflix’s wider push around local storytelling with global reach.

Netflix co CEO Ted Sarandos said the company’s global expansion was always built around producing stories that felt local to audiences in every market.

“The best way to be global was to start off intensely local.”

Sarandos said Netflix productions now take place across more than 4,500 cities and towns in over 50 countries, with the company investing more than US$135 billion into films and series over the past decade.

He also said every Netflix production creates jobs and supports local businesses in the communities where filming takes place.

“Every Netflix production is a local production, creating jobs and growing businesses wherever it’s made.”

Netflix also claims its productions have contributed more than US$325 billion to the global economy while creating over 425,000 jobs across cast and crew.

The campaign highlights productions ranging from Stranger Things and The Lincoln Lawyer to international titles filmed in Colombia, Mexico and Sweden, alongside examples of Netflix series influencing travel bookings, language learning, music charts and consumer trends.

It also reinforces the company’s ongoing push to position streaming productions as major contributors to local creative industries and economies around the world.
