A Government Railway Police (GRP) constable was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Odisha’s Khordha district on Wednesday, May 6, in an incident that has triggered outrage and raised serious questions about law and order.
The deceased, identified as Soumya Ranjan Swain, had been serving as a constable with GRP Cuttack for the past 12 years. As per police, the incident occurred in the Benupur area under Balianta police station limits while Swain was travelling with a colleague, Om Prakash Rout, reportedly to meet a senior railway official for official work.
Officials said tensions escalated after locals accused the duo of passing inappropriate remarks at two women. They also alleged that the duo, on motorcycle, hit the women and dragged them for some distance.
As word of the incident spread, a large crowd gathered at the spot. The situation quickly turned violent as the mob intercepted the motorcycle and allegedly assaulted Swain. He sustained severe injuries and died at the scene, while his companion is said to have escaped.
The victim’s family has levelled serious allegations against the local police, claiming that personnel present at the spot failed to intervene. “He was beaten to death in front of the police, but no one stepped in to save him,” the constable’s mother said.
A video of the assault has surfaced on social media, capturing the intensity of the attack and drawing widespread condemnation.
Police officials said a probe has been launched into the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena stated that both sides have filed complaints. “The other side has also alleged misconduct involving a woman. The investigation is ongoing, and we cannot disclose all details at this stage,” he said.
Authorities are working to identify those involved in the lynching and have assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over mob violence and the need for swift intervention to prevent such tragedies.
