ABC NEWS expands reach with AAP regional news partnership

ABC and AAP strike regional news-sharing deal to bolster emergency coverage

The ABC and Australian Associated Press (AAP) have entered into a content-sharing partnership aimed at improving access to public safety journalism in regional, rural and remote communities.

Under the agreement, AAP will provide the distribution infrastructure to support the ABC’s plan to make emergency-related digital articles freely available to local publishers. The arrangement is designed to reduce barriers for smaller outlets seeking timely information during crises.

The move comes amid ongoing contraction in regional media. Reports indicate that since 2019, more than 200 local newspapers across regional Australia have either reduced services or shut down entirely, resulting in fewer journalists and diminished local coverage. With a presence across 68 locations nationwide, including 58 in regional areas, the ABC is positioned to supply additional reporting to affected communities.

As part of the initiative, ABC News digital articles focused on public emergencies will be shared with 40 selected regional news providers in a one-year trial. Distribution will occur through AAP’s Newsroom web portal, which is intended to streamline access for participating publishers.

“The ABC and AAP recognise that collaboration across the media sector is essential to addressing the challenges facing local news providers and supporting the sustainability of quality local journalism, which is a critical part of a healthy democracy.

At the same time we’ll enhance Australians’ access to the ABC’s essential and trusted news and information at times when they need it the most, ensuring communities remain informed during times of crisis.”

Justin Stevens, ABC Director, News

“AAP has been distributing news to every corner of Australia for over 90 years.

We are proud to support this ABC-led initiative by providing the infrastructure to deliver critical public-interest journalism to local newsrooms across the country.”

Emma Cowdroy, AAP Chief Executive Officer

Applications for the pilot program have opened, with news providers invited to register interest via email by Monday 25 May. Eligible organisations must be regional outlets with an established digital audience, demonstrate a commitment to public interest journalism, and show a need for additional support in covering emergencies. Applicants are also required to have a complaints-handling system and membership of a relevant media association.

The selection process will be supported by the Australian Local News Resilience Project, led by Deakin University, which aims to encourage collaboration across the sector.
