Now that summer is officially here, we’re all armed with SPF and lightweight skincare. But while we pamper our skin, the scalp is often left out. Summer can be just as challenging for your scalp as it is for your skin, thanks to relentless heat, sticky humidity and prolonged sun exposure. The consequence is a scalp that feels greasy faster, strands that turn frizzy and dry and concerns like dandruff, hair fall and buildup becoming harder to manage. Add harsh UV rays and loo-adjacent winds into the mix and Indian summers can leave both your scalp and hair feeling stressed.
While most seasonal hair concerns are often treated from the lengths down, summer and the impending monsoon season is when a scalp-first approach matters most. A healthy scalp creates the foundation for healthier hair, especially when sweat, oil and environmental aggressors are constantly disrupting its balance. Keeping the scalp clean, calm and supported can help prevent common warm-weather issues before they start affecting your hair more visibly.
Why does summer wreak havoc on your scalp?
Dr Gaurav Garg, founder and director of Dermalife Skin and Hair Clinic explains, “Moist air raises perspiration levels, forming dampness across the scalp surface. With sustained wetness, fungal types like Malassezia thrive, often tied to flake formation and inflamed skin patches. As a result, scaling occurs, alongside discomfort and persistent scratching urges.”
In addition to increased oiliness and sweat, humidity can also directly impact the texture of your hair. Hair is naturally porous, which means it absorbs excess moisture from the air during hot and humid weather. This can disrupt the hair shaft, causing uneven drying, roughness and persistent frizz that feels nearly impossible to control.
Dr Rinky Kapoor, co-founder and director of The Esthetic Clinics® (TEC®), adds that sweat, pollution and product buildup can create what she describes as a “sticky” scalp environment, where excess oil, dead skin and environmental debris clog pores, trigger dandruff and interfere with healthy hair growth. In humid Indian summers, this combination can quickly make the scalp feel congested, irritated and harder to balance.
It’s essential to focus on keeping the scalp clean with lightweight, balancing products rather than overwhelming it with heavy formulas. Dr Garg adds, “Harsh cleansers used daily tend to backfire; moisture vanishes, prompting excess sebum production or redness instead. On the other hand, smearing rich oils right onto the roots often adds trouble, locking in perspiration and possibly sparking itchy or inflamed bumps.”
Dr Kapoor echoes this, noting that over-washing can strip away the scalp’s natural oils and trigger “reactive seborrhea,” where the scalp compensates by producing even more oil. In other words, overwashing or overloading your scalp can sometimes worsen the very issues you’re trying to fix. The goal is to maintain balance by cleansing enough to remove buildup while protecting your scalp barrier.
